Now that I’ve embraced both K-beauty and J-beauty, my skincare and makeup routine is a blend of the two, incorporating the best of both worlds. Here are 10 Korean and Japanese beauty products I can’t live without.

My skincare routine is pared down to four steps—cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, and protect. When it comes to makeup, I’m all for a cushion foundation, mascara, lip gloss… Maybe eyeliner, eyeshadow, and lipstick if I’m feeling ~fancy~. That’s it!
Keeping a simple approach to beauty prevents clutter, keeps my routine stress-free and helps me pinpoint exactly what my skin loves (or doesn’t!). Likewise, a simple makeup routine means I can have my face ready in 10 minutes flat. (Please don’t take that as a flex: I need the other 50 minutes to get my daughter ready!)

As someone who’s tested countless Japanese and Korean beauty products over the years, I’ve learned to prioritize quality over quantity. When I find something I love, I hold onto it like a daikichi (big fortune) from a shrine fortune slip. But with life’s inevitable changes—skin concerns, routines, and finances—I’ve had to make some swaps while still staying true to my favorites.
For example, I’ve transitioned from Kate’s liquid foundation to TIRTIR’s Mask Fit Cushion Foundation. Why? It’s lightweight, doesn’t settle into fine lines, and blends like a dream. Sure, I’ve worked with brands like Decorté, and their Zen Liquid Foundation is equally dreamy, but let’s just say it doesn’t align with my budget right now! The key is finding products that work for you, not the other way around.
These 10 Korean and Japanese beauty products I can’t live without help me attain the right balance of style, comfort, and affordability. Many of the Japanese products feature in my list of 10 Best Japanese Skincare Products Under 1000 yen and10 Best Japanese Skincare Products Under 15 Dollars.
1. Kose Softymo Deep Cleansing Oil
My “holy grail” of Japanese cleansing oils! Compared to DHC’s cult-classic Deep Cleansing Oil, Softymo’s version is lighter, more affordable, and packed with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter and jojoba oil. It’s perfect for removing makeup without leaving residue.

2. Melano CC Deep Clear Enzyme Wash
If “Melano CC” sounds familiar, you’re not imagining things—it’s a standout in Rohto’s Vitamin C-based product family. This enzyme wash combines clay, enzymes, and Vitamin C to deeply cleanse pores and brighten skin.

3. Tunemakers Undiluted Solution Peeling Lotion
This AHA/BHA-infused wipe off toner is my go-to for removing dead skin cells and hydrating the skin. At just over ¥1,500, it’s a bit of a splurge for a toner, but it’s worth every yen. I use this to wipe down my face, neck and chest. Because it is a peeling lotion (AKA exfoliates) use it sparingly, though if you’re a fellow oily-ista like me 3-4 times a week is suitable.

4. COSRX The 6 Peptide Skin Booster Serum
This K-beauty gem strengthens the skin barrier and calms redness, making it ideal for sensitive skin. Despite its watery texture, it does a fantastic job of hydrating the skin. Use it as a stand-alone toner or add a few drops of your favorite serum to customize.
Available on Amazon // Amazon Japan
5. COSRX Vitamin C Serum

Think of this as a supercharged version of the premium version of Melano CC intensive spot serum. It’s a bit pricier but well worth it for its ability to fade scars and brighten skin tone.
As I found out by trial and error, this is an intense formula that will stain your fingers, particularly if you have dry skin. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after application!
Available on Amazon // Amazon Japan

6. Nivea Sun Super Water Gel
This lightweight sunscreen is PA++++ and SPF 50+ which means it does double duty on protecting your skin from UVA and UVB rays! glides on easily and is great for sensitive skin, including my daughter’s. Note: “Super Water Gel” refers to its tough formulation and texture, not waterproof-ability!

Recap: 10 Korean and Japanese Beauty Products I Can’t Live Without
When you find products that just work, there’s no temptation to stray. That’s how I’ve embraced minimalism—not by restricting myself, but by curating a collection of trusted essentials that support my lifestyle. Whether it’s the Softymo Cleansing Oil that kicks off my skincare routine or the AMUSE Dew Tint in Tokyo Momo that adds a pop of color to my day, these products feel like home to me.
It’s also about balance. Some of these items are splurges, others are affordable finds. But together, they form a routine that feels intentional, not excessive. As I juggle work, motherhood, and the occasional PTA meeting, this simplified approach is my secret to looking and feeling put-together—on my terms.
