5 Statement Pieces That Instantly Upgrade A Fall Wardrobe

Some of my favorite things about fall in Japan is the weather — and fashion (and food too)! Here are my 5 statement pieces that instantly upgrade a fall wardrobe, courtesy of last weekend’s shopping adventure on Rakuten Japan and Uniqlo.

(Disclosure: All of these items were purchased via Rakuten Japan or Uniqlo, except #3 and #5, which were gifted to me as a Trendgramer influencer. Links to similar items on Amazon are included where available.)

1. Turban

Rakuten | Plus Nao

I’m totally embracing my natural hair, but on the days I want something more than a pineapple, I’ll be experimenting with turbans this year. I think turbans are a fun way to add a pop of color (and texture) without breaking the bank or suffering from buyer’s remorse.

I got this turban in 3 colors: wine, black, and brown. I’ll also be hitting up the 100 yen shop in search of inexpensive accessories that can serve as a makeshift brooch to give these turbans a bit of sparkle.

2. Semi-Sheer Lace Blouse

Rakuten | Happy Closet

This lacy Victorian-esque top adds a touch of femininity to any outfit. The sheer shoulders, sleeves, and neckline are complimented by a ribbed body.

There’s something about it that evokes the immortal words of Tyra Banks: “Hoe, but then make it fashion.”

We’re still boobin’ on, 19 months later, but little Kaiju doesn’t nurse often during the day. So, I can get away with wearing a toplike this!

3. Plaid Midi Skirt

I’d been on the fence about getting a plaid skirt, but thanks to Softbank’s Cyber Sunday campaign, I got this one for myself at Uniqlo (as well as Heattech for whole family.) After all, when it comes to fall, you can’t go wrong with plaid!

Six years ago during my very first visit to Seoul I bought a plaid flannel shirt that I wear all the time. While this skirt won’t replace my love for that flannel shirt, it’s certainly a bit more sophisticated.

When I’m feeling fancy, I’ll pair this with the semi-sheer lacy top and booties or go casual with ballet flats/sneakers and a sweatshirt. The possibilities are endless!

4. Sukajan

Rakuten | White Tiger

Short for YokoSUKA JAnpa- (横須賀ジャンパー), the sukajan was made popular by US servicemen in post-World War II Japan. They decorated their MA-1 bomber jackets with embroidery featuring their ports of service, and the trend caught on.

If you’re in Tokyo, head to Ameyoko, the side streets of Ueno, to get an original sukajan. I prefer this chic spin on the classic jacket. Those delicate flowers sure will look good dressed up or down!

5. 3-Way Shoulder Bag

Diaper bags can be super cumbersome, but unfortunately they carry everything I need. On the rare days that we travel by car, or I get a few hours to myself to go out, I want to go as light as possible! This 3 way handbag even comes with a mini-pouch for storing cosmetics — or snacks!
