Beauty at 40: What’s Changed & What’s Stayed the Same

Turning 40 feels like crossing an invisible threshold—one where you suddenly become hyper-aware of ingredient lists, SPF percentages, and whether or not your skincare is actually working for you. Let’s take a look at beauty at 40: what’s changed, what’s stayed the same, and how my blog posts over the years reflect this journey.

What’s Changed: Less is More (But Smarter is Key)

1. A Shift from K-Beauty to J-Beauty…and Back to K-Beauty

Once upon a time, I was all about that K-Beauty life! But pregnancy and life in Japan shifted my priorities. I could no longer hop over to Korea to stock up on my faves, so I started experimenting more with Japanese skincare (which, by the way, is just as good—if not better for my skin type).

My deep dive into the Japanese approach to anti-aging skincare taught me that hydration, gentle exfoliation, and consistency are everything. However, collaborations with Korean brands have showed me that K-beauty has come a long way since the second hallyu wave

2. Fewer Steps, Higher Quality

Gone are the days of 10-step routines. I now focus on a core set of products that work. These days, all my skin craves is a hydrating toner, a solid serum and…sunscreen!

3. Sun Protection = The Holy Grail

At 40, sunscreen is my salvation. I don’t leave the house without it, and I’m much more mindful about reapplication throughout the day. I’ve also started layering my SPF with makeup products that have built-in sun protection and have a colorful assortment of tinted sunscreens in my arsenal.

4. Ingredients Matter More Than Trends

At 25, I wanted the trending products. At 40, I want what works. Now, I research ingredients like a detective on a mission. Japanese whitening cosmetics once intrigued me for their brightening effects, but now I prioritize ones that focus on hydration, barrier support, and pigmentation control rather than just lightening. In fact, I’m all about Vitamin C, which is one of the many whitening ingredients in Japanese skincare.

5. Makeup is Now About Enhancing, Not Hiding

In my 20s, I was all about full-coverage foundations and bold looks. Now, I go for lightweight bases, sheer tints, and cream formulas that enhance rather than mask my skin. It’s all about looking fresh, not overdone, thanks to TIRTIR’s viral cushion foundation.

6. Cleansing Oils Are Still Queen

My skincare journey may have evolved, but my love for a good cleansing oil remains, though gels are a firm second place. Whether I’m removing sunscreen, makeup, or just the grime of the day, a double cleanse has been my nightly ritual for over a decade.

7. LuLuLun Sheet Masks Forever

Some beauty fads come and go, but my love for LuLuLun masks is eternal. These budget-friendly, ultra-hydrating masks have been a staple in my routine since I first discovered them, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

8. Multi-Use Japanese Products for Natural Hair

Japan isn’t exactly known for catering to natural hair, but I’ve managed to find a few gems that have stayed with me throughout the years. From camellia oil for sealing moisture to honey for shine and rice water rinses for strength, my approach to hair care has been all about adaptability.

9. Convenience is Key: Where I Shop Matters

My go-to places for skincare and makeup in Japan haven’t changed much over the years. Whether it’s department stores, drugstores, or online shopping, I still rely on the same spots. 10. The Simplicity of Japanese Skincare Philosophy

One thing that has always resonated with me is the Japanese skincare philosophy: gentle, hydrating, and effective, which is also seen in the Japanese approach to anti-aging skincare. Instead of constantly chasing new trends, I stick to simple, high-quality formulations like from Tunemakers that focus on skin health rather than drastic transformations. My approach has always been about maintaining my skin’s balance, and that hasn’t changed.

Final Thoughts: Confidence Over Everything

If my 20s were about experimentation and my 30s were about refinement, then my 40s will be about confidence. I’m more selective, more intentional, and more focused on what truly makes me feel good.

I’ve learned to live with less and live more in Tokyo, and that applies to beauty as well. My beauty routine isn’t just about skincare and makeup; it’s about embracing change, aging with grace, and, most importantly, feeling great in my own skin.

What has changed (or stayed the same) in your beauty routine over the years?
