Cleansing The J-Beauty Way To Clear & Healthy Skin

Cleansing seems simple enough—splash on some water, rub in some cleanser, and rinse, right?

Not quite.

Using the wrong cleansing technique can actually do more harm than good, leading to dryness, irritation, and breakouts. If you’ve ever wondered why your skin still feels tight or greasy after washing, it might be time for a technique upgrade.

Here’s how to properly cleanse your skin using the Japanese skincare method!

Step 1: Start with Dry Hands & a Dry Face

If you’re using an oil-based or gel cleanser, apply it directly to dry skin. This allows the cleanser to bind to makeup, sunscreen, and dirt for a deeper clean.

Step 2: Massage Gently (Not Vigorously!)

Rubbing too hard can lead to irritation and premature wrinkles. Instead, use gentle, circular motions to let the cleanser do its job.

Step 3: Use Lukewarm Water to Rinse

Hot water can strip moisture, while cold water won’t effectively remove residue. Stick to lukewarm water to keep your skin balanced.

Step 4: Follow Up With a Foam or Gel Cleanser (Optional but Recommended!)

If you wear makeup or sunscreen daily, a double cleansing method is ideal. Follow your oil or gel cleanser with a gentle foaming cleanser to remove any remaining residue.

Latest Additions to My Cleanser Rotation: Biore’s “Ouchi de Este” Series

If you loved my deep dive on Japanese cleansing oils, you’re going to want to bookmark my newest roundup featuring Japanese gel cleansers—and I’ve got two Biore picks that just made the cut!

Biore “Ouchi de Este” Face Cleansing Gel for Smooth Skin

This gel cleanser is ideal for those struggling with excess oil, visible pores, or rough texture. It uses Biore’s unique 角栓崩壊洗浄技術 (keratin plug-dissolving technology), powered by トロメタミン (tromethamine) to break down pore debris without being harsh.

  •  Best used in the shower when pores are open
  • Turns white as it dissolves sebum buildup
  • Makes a huge difference in morning makeup application—hello, smooth base!

Biore “Ouchi de Este” Face Cleansing Gel for Soft Skin

This one’s a gentle hero for my sensitive skin readers! It offers the same pore-purifying action with a soft, cushiony feel that won’t disrupt your skin barrier. I’ve been alternating it in depending on how my skin feels.

Bonus: Biore The Face Foam Cleanser Smooth Clear

Biore’s rich whipped foam cleanser is perfect for quick, effective cleansing after a workout or first thing in the morning. No lathering needed—just pump and go to deep clean pores!

Step 5: Pat (Don’t Rub) Your Skin Dry

Tugging at your skin with a towel? Big mistake. Instead, gently pat your face dry with a soft, clean towel.

Step 6: Apply Skincare Immediately

Cleansing leaves your skin more receptive to skincare products. Apply toner, essence, and moisturizer while your skin is still damp for maximum hydration!
