If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that my beauty journey started with a love affair with Korean beauty products. In a remarkable turn of events, I’ve returned to my K-beauty roots, allowing me to incorporate the best of Japanese and Korean products into my skincare routine. Here’s a closer look at my K-beauty and J-beauty journey as an American in Japan.
My K-Beauty and J-Beauty Journey as an American in Japan

South Korea’s vibrant, trendsetting skincare world drew me in with its innovative products and focus on hydration and glow.
However, as time passed and I settled more into my life in Japan, I found myself drawn to the simplicity and understated elegance of J-beauty.
It wasn’t just about switching from one set of products to another; it was a deeper shift in how I viewed skincare and beauty overall. Living here, I’ve learned to appreciate the Japanese philosophy of skincare, which emphasizes minimalism and enhancing one’s natural beauty.
(For the purpose of this post, “beauty” focuses on skincare, though I do mention makeup.)
Cultural Influence and Skincare Philosophy
One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed between K-beauty and J-beauty is their approach to skincare.

K-beauty often focuses on achieving a “glass skin” look—think dewy, poreless, and glowing. It’s an extensive routine with many steps designed to layer hydration and build radiance.

The Korean approach to skincare is all about innovation, with new products and ingredients constantly hitting the market. It’s exciting, dynamic, and perfect for those who love to experiment.

On the other hand, J-beauty embraces simplicity. It’s about gentle, effective products that prioritize skin health over time.

The Japanese approach to beauty is more about maintenance than transformation, favoring fewer steps and focusing on quality ingredients that work harmoniously with the skin.
Living in Japan, I’ve come to love this minimalistic approach that highlights skin health and beauty in a more subtle, understated way. (And, how could I forget the amazing point programs that Japanese stores offer?)

Working with Both Brands: An Insider’s Perspective
As an American beauty curator in Japan, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work with both Korean and Japanese brands. This has given me a front-row seat to see how each country approaches beauty, both from a product development perspective and a marketing standpoint.

Korean brands are often trend-driven, quick to innovate, and always on the lookout for the next big thing in skincare. They’re bold, creative, and aren’t afraid to experiment with new formulations and concepts. Not to mention the whole “spare no expense” approach when it comes to marketing, especially through pop-up shops and by crowning K-pop acts as brand ambassadors.

Think of how TIRTIR went viral for upgrading their Red Mask Fit Cushion Foundation to 40 shades. Are they the first inclusive Asian cosmetic company? Not really, but they did it on a big scale with a cushion foundation.
So, my work with K-beauty brands often involves highlighting these innovative products and educating my audience on how to incorporate them into their routines.

Japanese brands, however, focus more on refinement and quality. Their products are crafted with precision, and there’s a deep respect for trusted ingredients and time-tested formulas.
Combined with tough cosmetics industry standards that respect aging as a process, J-beauty actively encourages you to take a preventive approach to skincare.

When working with J-beauty brands, I often find myself emphasizing the science behind the products and the holistic approach they take to skincare.
Brand Collaborations and Content Creation

My collaborations with both K-beauty and J-beauty brands have been eye-opening.
With Korean brands, I’ve been able to explore a world of new ingredients and textures that were initially outside my comfort zone.

The Korean beauty industry’s rapid pace keeps things fresh and exciting, and I love sharing these discoveries with my audience. Recent partnerships, with COSRX and TIRTIR, in particular have opened my eyes to a playful side of beauty.
Conversely, my partnerships with Japanese brands have taught me the value of simplicity and consistency.
For example, collaborating with ORBIS and FANCL, brands that focus on minimalist beauty routines, was a refreshing change from the elaborate, multi-step routines I was used to.
It made me appreciate the less-is-more approach and how effective it can be, especially for those with sensitive or reactive skin. (Special shout-out to the “ain’t nobody got time for that” crowd!)
Navigating the Beauty Industry in Japan

Being an American in Japan’s beauty industry has been both a challenge and a joy. The cultural differences can be significant, particularly in terms of marketing strategies and consumer expectations.
Japanese consumers, for instance, tend to favor subtlety and quality, whereas the American market often values boldness and innovation. Learning to navigate these nuances has helped me better understand how to communicate with my diverse audience.
Working with both Korean and Japanese brands has also allowed me to merge these different perspectives. My background and experience have been assets, enabling me to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western beauty philosophies and offer a unique viewpoint to my followers.
I’ve also been able to leverage my combined social media following, Pinterest account and this blog to negotiate with Japanese and Korean clients. I still feel like a fish out of water when I attend industry events, so “confidence” remains something I need to work on!
These days, I’ve gone through another metamorphosis, using my experience in the Japanese beauty industry to curate bespoke beauty concierge services for Tokyo residents and visitors.
Embracing Both Worlds

Switching from K-beauty to J-beauty wasn’t about choosing one over the other—it was about embracing what each has to offer. This journey has taught me that beauty is universal and that every culture brings its own unique touch to skincare.
By blending both K-beauty and J-beauty in my routine, I’ve discovered a balance that works for me and reflects my love for exploring different skincare philosophies.
