Why Should Your Skin Care Change With The Seasons?

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, ever wondered why your skincare routine should pull a seasonal switcheroo?

Think of it like swapping out your winter coat for a breezy floral dress. Winter skincare is all about locking in moisture. But, come spring, the rising temps call for a skincare product overhaul.

You see, during the winter, temperatures are low and the air is dry. That’s why we supplement our skincare routine with rich, nourishing products that hydrate and and moisturize. But, our skin won’t need all that additional moisture in the spring when temperatures and humidity rises.

Even if winter’s cold never bothered you anyway, spring weather can harm the guardian of our glow AKA your skin barrier, if you’re not prepared.

This is especially true for our face, where the skin is thin and particularly susceptible to seasonal changes like changes in humidity/temperature, UV radiation/sun exposure and environmental stresses such as pollen.

As our skin faces off with seasonal challenges, let’s prep for the ultimate showdown with 5 easy product swaps:

Your Winter to Spring J-Beauty Guide In 5 Easy Steps

Step 1: Choose a Mild, Light Cleanser

When it’s time to practice the Setsubun chant of Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi! (Evil out! Good luck in!) It’s also time to say: “Out with the thick, winter-hydrating cleansers, and in with the gel-based products!”

Start with one of Japan’s top cleansing oils like FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil (above).

For an extra skincare boost, choose a gel cleanser with antibacterial properties like ORBIS CLEARFUL Deep Cleansing Liquid.

If you have sensitive and/or combo skin, I’ve got you covered! Try Curel Foaming Wash to remove dirt and pollutants while maintaining your skin’s moisture balance.

Step 2. Move On To A Lighter Moisturizer

Hanajirushi Coix Seed Skin Conditioner (above) and Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Premium Lotion are your hydration companions for the warmer days.

Bid “sayonara” to heavy-duty moisturizers and welcome the spring breeze with water-based magic.

Milky and creamy moisturizers do wonders for our skin during the winter months as they lock in hydration. But, we won’t need them come spring as they seal in sweat and oil, which can potentially lead to breakouts. And, who wants to deal with breakouts AND hay fever?

Step 3. Welcome Water-Based Serums

Swap the winter oil-based serums for lighter, water-based wonders like Kiku Masamune Sake Brewing Skin Care Essence  (above) or Hada Labo Gokujyun Essence.

Nourishment without the weight – your skin’s new spring mantra! You’ll still be able to nourish your skin, but lighter products allow you layer them with other products during the daytime.

Step 4. Pick a Peeling Gel or Peeling Toner

Regular exfoliation during the winter months helps remove layers of dry skin caused by low temperatures and humidity. But, now it’s time to ditch the winter scrub for gel and liquid exfoliators.

Two of my affordable J-beauty favorites are  DETClear Bright & Peel Peeling Jelly  (above) and TUNEMAKERS Undiluted Solution Peeling Lotion

Step 5. Switch To Tinted Sunscreen

Spring, the season of new beginnings, calls for sun protection with a hint of color correction (and primer, too)!

To counteract redness try Skin Aqua Tone Up UV Essence in Mint Green (above, SPF 50+ PA++++).

For a  bright and even skin tone, think pink with ALLIE Chrono Beauty Tone Up UV in Rose Chaire (SPF 50+ PA++++).

Finally, go for  Kose Suncut Sunscreen Tone Up UV Essence Color Control (SPF 50+ PA++++) as it has lavender hues which neutralizes dull yellow undertones for a natural-looking finish.
