Although I love seeing kids in the morning parade their pastel backpacks, I insisted that Miss M choose a sensible color like caramel/brown, red, or even black. (Traditionally, boys use black/navy bags and girls use red bags). Alas, I was outvoted and a “champagne pink” randsel arrived in late January. Random Japan Fact: Randsel became the default school bag after the Meji Emperor wore one when attending primary school. Elementary school, however, is a new adventure for both of us! I have no idea what to expect, but I do feel “disadvantaged.” Even though I speak the language, I feel like I already missed the out on a lot simply because I don’t have the cultural background (or any experience with Japanese elementary school!) compared to Japanese moms, who are expected to be the primary parent. So, for the time being, I won’t blog much about the elementary school experience until maybe summer vacation, after I’ve had a few months to reflect.
