𝚂𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚢 𝙵𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚢

𝚂𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚢 𝙵𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚢 𝚊𝚝 𝙾𝚓𝚒𝚖𝚊 𝙺𝚘𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚜𝚞𝚐𝚊𝚠𝚊 𝙿𝚊𝚛𝚔 // 大島小松川公園のローラー滑り台に挑戦👩‍👧Ojima Komatsugawa Park is a 2-3 minute walk from Higashi Ojima Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line (a 30 minute ride from Shinjuku Station).

There are 2 obstacle courses. The large one has a giant climbing net and large slide for adventurous kids (and adults!). There’s also a mini-adventure course for little ones testing their boundaries.

The park straddes the Koto City/Edogawa City borders. Nearby is the Nakagawa River and its gorgeous waterfront cherry blossom promenade🌸

#ランドセルフォトThe cherry blossoms have come and gone, but I wanted to share this lovely spring snapshot of Miss M wearing her shiny new randsel (ランドセル//randoseru)🌸

Japanese school kids use these backpacks throughout the entire 6 years of their grade school, so they’re usually made from leather or sturdy synthetic materials.

Although I love seeing kids in the morning parade their pastel backpacks, I insisted that Miss M choose a sensible color like caramel/brown, red, or even black. (Traditionally, boys use black/navy bags and girls use red bags). Alas, I was outvoted and a “champagne pink” randsel arrived in late January.

Random Japan Fact: Randsel became the default school bag after the Meji Emperor wore one when attending primary school. However, randsel are actually *NOT* required for Japanese public elementary schools!

ガンプラに夢中 @ #ガンダムベース東京！

For the uninitiated, the iconic Gundam series has captured hearts with its epic space sagas and futuristic battles since 1979. The series revolutionized both anime and mecha culture, and the genius idea of #Gunpla (Gundam plastic models) emerged, allowing fans to build and customize their own plastic model kits.

Miss M and I managed to get our hands on an ~elusive~ Gundam Calibran gunpla kit (by lining up on release day). After putting it together,we went to Gundam Base Tokyo to recycle the leftover plastic parts. The Witch From Mercury displays were a nice touch!

夏の風物詩、久しぶりの夏祭りと江戸川区花火大会✨🎆夏の夜空に舞う美しい花火に感動しました👩‍👧

It’s been 4 years since we attended a proper summer festival, (natsu matsuri//夏祭り) and saw the Edogawa Fireworks Show.

Miss M is wearing a jinbei (甚平), a two piece kimono-like garment made from lightweight breathable fabric. It’s a kids’ wardrobe staple for summer in Japan and they’re generally very affordable. I like to pair her jinbei (or any garment) with Airism tank tops from UNIQLO.

PS: When buying a jinbei (or any
piece of kids’ clothing) remember that sizes in Japan are based on a child’s height in centimeters.

#卒園おめでとう 🌸 In Japan, graduation ceremonies are a bittersweet way to celebrate the arrival of spring. The Japanese school year ends in March and starts anew in April, and today Miss M said “Sayonara” to her kindergarten classmates. Next step — elementary school!
